(Sarasota National Golf Club)

As a REALTOR® in Venice, FL, when I think about homes and property for sale, I often think of amenities available to clients. Notwithstanding the ocean, the bay, beaches, ponds, parks and “The Suncoast,” if you appreciate the game, you need not venture far for great golf. My favorites are the six (6) courses below. With one exception, all are within a 15 minute drive from the downtown area and offer novice and expert alike a great golfing experience. There are leagues for women and men, many play in mixed foursomes. If you want to play, you will be accommodated.

Sarasota National Golf Club
Jacaranda West Country Club
Pelican Pointe Golf & Country Club
Waterford Golf Club
Venetian Golf & River Club
Heron Creek Golf & Country Club

Here is a brief overview of each of these courses. You can check out the links above for more information directly from course websites and call them to make tee times.

With one exception, all are located in Venice, FL. Heron Creek is the exception and so beautiful and challenging I had to include this North Port, FL course.

SARASOTA NATIONAL The overwhelming fact here is that this course is always kept in spectacular condition and is built next to an Audubon International Certified Signature Sanctuary. You must pause often just to appreciate the beauty of the land and course architecture. The course in surrounded by native wetlands and preserves, providing a dramatic backdrop that is as beautiful as it is challenging. Fairways and greens alike are as close to perfect as you can get. With 5 tee choices, the tips (Black: 75.2/136) present a wonderful challenge to your wedge game as well as long game. You will want to float approach shots into numerous greens with accuracy, avoiding sand traps. This course requires finesse and is beautifully laid out. It requiries a bit more distance to your shots and good course management to score well. You must play here at some point. Well worth the time and price. Prices depend on season and time of day: $45 to $95..

JACARANDA WEST Marketed as the “best place to play” on The Suncoast, this course has charm and a relaxed atmosphere. I describe this as a golfers course best for those with handicaps of 15+. The tips are 6574 yds., allowing room for many levels of play. Prices range from $25 to $66.

PELICAN POINTE Pelican Pointe Golf and Country Club is known for golf, first and foremost. The Club prides itself on the golf experience. Pelican Pointe is routinely rated as one of the finest facilities in the area and has been awarded the “Reader’s Choice” award by residents in Sarasota County every year since 2001. The 27 holes range from a gentle 5,326 yards to 7,182 yards, the different combinations of nines allows golfers to consistently play a variety of golf hole designs. The USGA golf course ratings vary from (66.9 to 74.5). Wildlife, natural preserves and wetlands accent the day on the links. There are no parallel fairways at Pelican Pointe and seldom do you see any golfers other than the ones playing on your hole. This type of privacy makes your day on the links just a little more enjoyable. “Tee it Forward” has also been widely accepted by the membership. Golf at Pelican Pointe is a lifestyle. Fees are $31 to $72.

WATERFORD Located just north Pelican Pointe, Waterford is part of three courses including Capri Isles and Calusa Lakes. It can best be described as an easy course to underrate. But it has a wide variety in its 27 holes to test every aspect of your game and it is spread out with a unique layout. (USGA 66.6/114 to 72.3/127) provide a wide range of play. It is a course to play when you want to “work” on your game. At times the greens can be a bit uneven and do not run true. The rest of the course more than makes up for this. The Sawgrass nine is a real treat. Green Fees are $25 to $70.

THE VENETIAN The only private club in the lineup, the 18-hole, par-72 masterpiece at Venetian Golf Club, features generous fairways framed with natural-looking mounds, strategically located bunkers and an abundance of grass hollows. Hazards are configured in a manner to make forced carries optional. With eight sets of tee markers and featuring TifEagle® greens, Venetian provides players of all abilities with a dynamic golfing experience. (USGA 69.5/118 to 74.4/129.) Guest Fees are $30 to $89..

HERON CREEK The moment you step on the first tee at Heron Creek, you’ll experience the exhilaration of playing a brilliantly designed and meticulously maintained championship course. Challenging, but not intimidating, the course design includes numerous elevation changes very unique to the Florida Suncoast. Sparkling water features, and all the natural beauty of the actual Heron Creek make this a course to see not just play. With the variety and challenges offered by the Oaks, Marsh and Creek Nine layouts, playing golf at Heron Creek is an experience you’ll want to repeat over and over again. With beautiful marshes and water used wonderfully as part of each hole, you will remember this course. (USGA 66.8/116 to 72.5/143). Off RT 75 at Exit 182 in North Port or RT 41 and Sumter Blvd., I try to play here 2-3 times per month. Green Fees are $49 to $89.

When not assisting clients buying and selling homes in Venice, FL, I may be found on one of these courses. Given the great choices, I personally will not join a private club. So if you need a playing partner, feel free to call me, I just might be available!
