NOKOMIS, FL (POP. 3,700 EST. 2016) is an exceptionally attractive waterfront community in southwest Florida, immediately north of Venice. Nokomis was founded in 1868. It’s named after the grandmother of Hiawatha, from the famous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

Nokomis is famous for Casey Key, a barrier island split with the CDP of Osprey created by the intracoastal waterway, where there are beachfront houses worth millions of dollars lining the key. Nokomis has 14 miles of white sandy beach on the south end of Casey Key, where the Nokomis Beach and Park is set on 22 beautiful Florida acres, with 1,700 feet alongside the Gulf of Mexico. Swimming, boating, fishing, skiing, and beach volleyball are just a sample of the recreations residents and visitors enjoy on Nokomis Beach. Lifeguards, free parking, concessions, restrooms, and picnic tables are provided.

Nokomis Beach is the county’s oldest public beach, on Casey Key west of the Albee Road Bridge. The North Jetty Fish Camp on Nokomis Beach sells burgers and fishing licenses; it also features horseshoe pits and a playground for the kids.

More than 30 golf courses, many of them legendary, are available to golfers in the Nokomis-Sarasota region. Oscar Scherer State Park is just north of Nokomis, the Myakka State Forest is just to the south, and the 57-square mile Myakka River State Park is set just to the east of Nokomis. Hiking, camping, and picnicking are hugely popular at all three parks, along with birding, bicycling, canoeing, and kayaking. Horseback riding and canoe and kayak rentals are offered at Myakka River State Park.

For residents, of course, the most important aspect of Nokomis is the homes. Single-family homes ranging from modest bungalows to stately waterfront mansions can be found in Nokomis, along with luxury condos in several styles and sizes. Golf communities, equestrian communities, and waterfront neighborhoods are all part of the Nokomis scene. Potential homebuyers are almost certain to find their Florida dream home in one of these charming Nokomis communities.
